From the artist:

I was raised by my grandfather, following Kazakh tradition, where the eldest members of the family take care of the oldest grandchild. From a young age, I loved listening to stories, histories, legends, and fairy tales that the adults shared during evening gatherings. As I drifted off to sleep, I would envision all these tales in my dreams. I also helped my grandmother carve ornaments for sirmak (traditional Kazakh felt carpet). I enjoyed seeing how these ornaments transformed into beautiful, colourful patterns. My grandmother would tell me how you could discern a girl's character by the sound of her sholpy (traditional Kazakh instrument), and she shared the songs sung during the bride's departure to the groom's village. My grandmother was skilled at playing the harmonica, and the music transported me far into the realms of fairy tales, where brave heroes ('batyrs') rescued their people, and beautiful maidens roamed through blossoming fields. When I paint, I can hear the melodies played by my grandmother and the stories told by the elders of the village.
