Galymzhan Akhmetov

  • Galymzhan Akhmetov is a ceramist-sculptor born on 25 February 1969 in Chimkent, Kazakhstan. He's the son of the renowned Kazakh sculptor Rysbek Akhmetov. Having received his education from prestigious art institutions, including the Almaty Art School named after N.V. Gogol and the Kazakh State Theatre and Art Institute named after Zhurgenov, specialising in sculpture, Galymzhan became a member of the Artists' Union of the Republic of Kazakhstan. An active participant in national and international exhibitions, Galymzhan Akhmetov's works can be found in private collections in the UK, the US, and Japan.

Akhmetov's creativity is a striking example of contemporary art where a profound interest in form, rhythm, and spatial organisation takes centre stage. His works are marked by a distinct emotional intensity, bringing his sculptures to life with expressiveness. A defining feature of Akhmetov's creative style is his adeptness with compositional elements and sculptural mass. His works are monumental in composition; the artist skilfully plays with silhouette, achieving harmony between material and volume. In his sculptures, chamotte and clay are more than just basic materials; they dynamically engage with the shape, imparting a unique and individual character to his works.

His work shows interest in stylising elements of ancient Turkic sculpture. This lends historical depth to his creations, allowing them to embody harmony between tradition and modernity. His sculptures are a masterful blend of the past and present. Interestingly, even in Akhmetov's smaller pieces, there is a retained succinctness and expressiveness that doesn't diminish when transitioning to larger scales. This attests to his ability to scale ideas while maintaining artistic quality.

Akhmetov's artistry doesn't easily fit into a single category. It represents a unique and inspired art form that fuses tradition with modernity and material with form.
